Baptism in the New Testament:
1. Always For Believers Only as a PUBLIC Testimony of their
decision for Christ
2. Always using as much water as possible, immersing
someone
-
"Now as they went down the road, they came to some
water. And the eunich said, "see, here is water. What hinders me from being
baptized? Then Phillip said, "if you believe with all your heart, you
may!" Acts 8:36
-
Meaning of Baptitzo –to immerse, plunge, sink, drench,
overwhelm
3. Always in close proximity to the date of one’s
conversion
4. Demonstrates following the obedient example of Jesus,
pleasing the Heavenly Father
- Jesus came to be baptized. John tried to prevent him,
saying, "I have need to be baptized by you, and are you coming to
me?" But Jesus said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it
is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed him. When he
had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the
heavens were opened to Him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a
dove and alighting on him, and a voice came from heaven, saying, "this
is my beloved son, in whom I am well-pleased." Matthew 3:13-17
5. At the Great Commission Jesus made winning disciples
and Baptizing them one of the highest priorities of the church
6. The Apostles commanded early disciples to be baptized
- "Can anyone forbid water, that these should be
baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" And he
commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Acts 10:47-48 (Peter)
7. Demonstrates what salvation is – Just as Christ died,
was buried, and rose, we have died to our old life, buried our former way of
living, and now live to Christ
8. Demonstrates our unity with other believers
- "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one
body"
- I Corinthians 12:13
9. Does not save, but is a testimony to salvation
- "this is also an antitype which now saves us –
baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good
conscience toward God)
- I Peter 3:21
10. Does not guarantee salvation
- See Acts 8, where Simon the magician was baptized but
still seems to be very lost!
