Personal Testimony
January 2009
I was in my early 50s when I came to know Christ. Before that it seemed like a very black time. Deb and I were not on the same page when it came to our marriage and the way we raised our boys. Looking back I could see how hard I made it on Deb. My accepting Christ did not happen overnight; it was a very gradual thing. The big thing that happened was 9-11. When it hit, I found out I could not protect my boys from harm. Both of them were in the service at the time and I could not handle not being able to protect them. What a relief it was when I was saved to realize I had Someone I could call on in my time of need.
Looking back, I realize that God placed people in my life from the time I was small to bring my attention to Him. Even though I wasn’t attending church, God was bringing His people to me. When I was a boy, a guy named Delbert Lash, a youth worker at a church we briefly attended, befriended me. Bob Reeves, a pastor in Florida, became my friend and would come to the house to play pool and watch football with me. Deb’s Sunday School classes through the years, Deb’s grandma and mom, and Betty Towers, a friend, all prayed for me faithfully through the years and reached out to me in simple friendship. God even used my love of Civil War history and the life story of Stonewall Jackson, one of my heroes, to open my eyes to what a difference God can make in a person’s life.
I still have problems that arise. The difference is I can call on my Holy Father and He hears me. Once I called praying a sign of weakness. Now I consider it a sign of power and strength. I now have a purpose in life and Deb and I are closer than we have ever been.
