Missions and Evangelism

Guided by the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and Jesus' instructions to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8), WHBC endeavors to make disciples in the Valley and beyond!

Wayne Hills Baptist’s Great Commission involvement is guided by 3 Bible passages:

Then Jesus came near and said to them, “all authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” -Matthew 28:18-20

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.  -Jesus in Acts 1:8

And (in Heaven) they sang a new song: “You (Jesus) are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slaughtered, and You redeemed people for God by Your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation.  -Revelation 5:9

From these passages we understand that our purpose as believers in Jesus Christ is to unite our efforts to take the good news of Jesus to all peoples for the glory of God. This involves evangelism, discipleship, church planting, leader training, and intentional cross-cultural missions engagement and partnerships.

Our Jerusalem is Augusta County , Virginia. Our Judea is Virginia and the United States of America. Our Samaria is those near us who are different culturally than we are. And the ends of the earth involves everywhere else, particularly the least reached peoples on earth. We believe Jesus would have us be acting in all of these areas at the same time.

So as a church we begin by having and supporting several ministries to reach children and youth. Every generation is lost until it is not, so children and youth ministry is missions ministry. We also support many fine local ministries within the church and without that reach out in our community. We have also been involved in planting several churches in our general area in the last decade. This includes a church plant in our former building when we relocated, and a current Deaf church plant within our building.

WHBC gives 10 % of our undesignated offerings (Budget giving) through the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Within Virginia, through the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia, this helps strengthen sister churches, plants lots of churches and engages in ministry and mission projects. It also allows us to help educate future workers throughout the Southern Baptist Convention and do mission work in North America through the North American Mission Board and around the world through the International Mission Board. Both have over 5,000 missionaries heavily involved in Great Commission work!

In the past decade we have sent out members of our church to full-time work through both of these mission boards to be church planters and engage Unreached People Groups. As a church we also have adopted an Unreached People Group in West Africa that we take quarterly trips to visit and share the gospel. Since 2000 we have had over 150 people take an overseas mission trip!

Wayne Hills engages in ministry and missions beyond the Cooperative Program, but is very excited about how the Cooperative Program allows for comprehensive impact. Thus we view it as our foundational starting place.

Therefore just as we encourage members to tithe, WHBC tithes as well, because we can do more together than alone! We also encourage our sister churches to move toward giving ten percent through the Cooperative Program as well! Approximately 20% of our overall giving goes to various mission causes along the Acts 1:8 spectrum.

As we join God in what He is doing here and around the world, we take great joy in the promise in Revelation 5:9 that there will be someone from every people group in Heaven! Excited about that, we pray, we participate, and we partner to make disciples of all nations!
